A little owl SOLD

 Little Owl
6" x 6" watercolor
$50 plus $6 US shipping or $15 international shipping

I've always wanted to paint an owl. I don't know why. They just seem like such graceful and introspective birds.

And of course, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. And even though this isn't exactly the same kind of owl as Hedwig, she still reminds me of her. :))

I decided to approach this painting a little differently. I've been spending more time with my sketchbook lately and I wanted to see if I could get a painted sketch type of effect with this painting.

I got this idea from one of my favorite artists, Kimberly Kelly Santini, who paints the most awesome acrylic paintings of animals that I just love. The thing I love about Kimberly's painted sketches is that they really do look like sketches only with paint. And I LOVE looking at sketches.

I loosened up, and finished this little owl pretty quickly and I really like it. I think I'll be doing more like this in the future.

And please, if any of you guys have a better idea for a title than "Little Owl" lay it on me, I'm really not all that committed to my title. :))

Have a great rest of the week everyone! Huzzah!

  2. I think you definitely accomplished what you wanted to in this watercolor; the face especially has a sketch like quality.

  3. Yes.. It has that loose sketch like quality. Especiclly those bold brushmarks on the body.. I am a bigger HP fan that you. :)

  4. That owl has amazing soulful eyes, especially striking as the rest of it is so loosely sketched. Love the fairytale colors, too! <3

  7. We have more owls this year than ever before. They hoo hoo as soon as the sun sets and then hoot us to bed with an occasional screech thrown in. We have a Kimberly Santini hanging on one of our art walls-love her work. Yours as well.

  11. The different palette and style still suits you great :) Love whites and dark wise eyes! I too have started using the water brush pens and started sketching with just paints and they are so much fun as well as a big learning tool!

  13. Aww...how cute is this? I love owls, and wish I saw them more often when I'm out hiking. It does have a wonderful sketcherly (is that a word? It is now!) quality to it, and I'm always a fan of vignetted backgrounds anyway :).

  15. I love this owl. It truly is beautiful. I love all wild birds. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be one and fly high in the sky?

    Happiness to all.

  16. You have such a great color sense -- this is a very colorful painting but does not look garish at all. The eyes are captive as usual -- every time I look into the eyes of your painted portraits (including animal portraits) they always totally such me in. I never saw anybody painting eyes as well as you and that's not an exaggeration. I'm soooooo terrified of the thought of painting anything with eyes -- I just totally admire your ability of doing them! I also like the sketchy look of this painting -- using marks and puddles to hint feather patterns. Wonderfully done!

How is weather in Utah in March? Are you still planning to hold the workshop of painting animals? Keep me updated!

  19. I think that it's because you put so much soul in to the eyes, whether sketching or serious painting, that's why either way your subjects seem so alive and draw me right in. This owl is beautiful (of course) and I love it's sketchy yet painterly quality. Sketches are my favorite thing to look at too! :0)
