'Icy eyes' sold
3" x 5" colored pencil on bristol
So. . . I'm kind of in love with my colored pencils right now. I used to think that I could only draw really large and complex pieces with colored pencils. I don't know why because I haven't ever really thought like that about watercolor. But then I thought, why? Why not just do a small piece and focus on what you want to draw the most? Which in this case was this sweet puppy's icy blue eyes and shiny fur.
And so I did. And it was fun. And now I'm addicted to doing these small portraits in colored pencil. I'm adding this to my series of eyes (and I use the term 'series' very loosely here) and hope to paint more. The eyes are always my favorite part of every painting or drawing I do.
Now I must go and cuddle up on the couch with a blanket and my youngest little boy (who has a summer cold. Bummer) and listen to the rain fall on our roof. It's been so long since we've gotten any rain and I love it! Huzzah!!
See you soon friends. :)

Oh yeah, and is another pic I took for my etsy shop of this drawing. I got the idea from Carol Blackburn who suggested I set my painting up on an easel. Why that never occured to me I'll never know, so thank you Carol for giving me the idea! :)
This is absolutely amazing, Crystal! I love the eyes! If I could only learn to do eyes like yours! I love your colored pencil work. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteTerrific eyes and fur! The picture looks great on the easel too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic little painting, Crystal! It's obvious you are enjoying the colored pencils, and I can tell this was a fun painting to do (don't you just love it when that happens? ;) ).
ReplyDeleteDes yeux attendrissants dans cette jolie oeuvre... Ce chiot me paraît irrésistible.
ReplyDeleteUn merveilleux travail également dans le pelage.
bravo !
Gros bisous à vous.
Hermosa composición. Una mirada fascinante.
ReplyDeleteFelicitaciones.

ReplyDeleteWow this is awesome, Crystal....you certainly got that fur perfectly and of course the eyes. It look great on the easel. Thanks for the mention. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece, Crystal. Your CP pieces are as lovely as your watercolour work :)
ReplyDeletethis is beautiful Crystal - I have some coloured pencils which I've dabbled with a little - I must get them out as they're just sitting there while the watercolours get all the attention!! Glad you've finally got some rain your way - we still have gallons of it here - it has been relentless!!! Hope your son is feeling better x
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see your coloured pencil work I think to myself how is that possible with such a humble medium. You take the ordinary and create a spectacle out of it.
ReplyDeleteBy the way its raining here too. :)
ReplyDeleteThis one is both funny and adoring.
ReplyDeleteFun crop, with focus on those blue sensitive eyes, lovely
I always love the cropped version of a painting..especially the eyes which says it all. This is really beautiful..SO realistic.! Hope your son gets better quick, Crystal!!
ReplyDeleteWell, first of all, the drawing is exquisite! In fact I can't find a good enough word to describe it! I love those blues in his shiny fur and oh those eyes!! I like that if you look closely, you can see the reflection of a person looking in to the dogs eyes - just STUNNING! And as for the easel - well I saw these on Dreama's blog and I am dying to know where to get them from? Can you buy them online? :0)
ReplyDeleteWould you just look at those eyes! Adorable, imploring eyes. Another great piece and love how you staged it, get shaped matt really shows it off.
ReplyDeleteHoping we get some of that rain here soon too, and hope your little guy feels better soon!
The puppy is adorable and the painting absolutely beautiful!! As always Crystal, brilliant job.
ReplyDeleteHope your son gets better soon.
Warm regards.
Crystal, it's beautiful!! You are so multi-talented. I think you master every medium you try! I agree there is something special about colored pencils. That's all I used in college. They can be hard on your hands. I love the small size of this and how you cropped it. And Carol, was so smart--looks great on the easel:)
ReplyDeleteI knew you were a whiz with the coloured pencils but this drawing or should I say painting is just off the scales wow and wow again and it looks spectacular on an easel too, well done Crystal! Hope your little one soon feels better.
ReplyDeleteJust stunning Crystal, you're soooo good.
ReplyDeleteColored pencils are fantastic. And you use them brilliantly. I've never tried them on bristol, but I will. Your smooth results are very attractive. A great picture of a dog with wonderful eyes. When we were in the art business, small paintings were in demand for tabletop easel display. Good suggestive selling Crystal.
ReplyDeleteThis really takes my breath away. The eyes are so captivating... I also love how you depict the soft texture of his fur.
ReplyDeleteThe presentation over the easel looks great! I guess it'll fly out of your home in no time ;-)
Sorry for sending you a long email of inquiry. Please feel free to answer whenever you are free and don't hurry at all -- I know your schedule is very very busy, especially in the summer... Enjoy the sun and outdoors with your boys! ;-)
He really does have beautiful icy eyes. Wonderful work, Crystal. It's funny, I always felt colored pencils were for small works. We all have our on perceptions about different mediums.:)
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say - I hope your youngest is better SOON, but in the meantime, enjoy listening to the rain.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a sweet little woofer and you captured that questioning look so perfectly! I hope your sweet buddle is better soon (hugs).
ReplyDeleteYou've really mastered those colored pencils. This piece is amazing. Those eyes are so expressive and the fur has a beautiful sheen. I have several styles and brands of pencils and have used them off and on for years but have never been able to get a peice to look like a water color. Big hugs and get well wishes for your little guy. xox
ReplyDeleteI like your artwork so much that when I go someplace and see a beautiful animal or baby I think, "Crystal would paint that well." :)
