Head Study

8 x 10 watercolor

"All Set"

I really like to paint head studies of anything. It's just fun. My kids are sick and I'm recovering so I'm taking a tip from Kim and posting an older work. I painted this last year, just for fun, I really liked trying to capture the bright red color of the horse. He was beautiful!

Wow. He's majestic. I love everything about this painting.

Look at those muscles. You are so good at this.

I hope the kids and you get well soon and you get back to your painting ways :)

  7. Thanks Catie!! Glad you like it! We'll have to chat about that. :)

Prabal, thank you! I love horses, I'm probably going to be painting some more of them.

Thanks Sujit! You're so kind :) I kind of wish I had made the background a little more subtle, but I still like it. It was really fun to do, kind of felt care free. Sometimes I stress too much about painting, sucks all the fun out of it. Thanks for the get well wishes too :)

    Thank you Michelle!

Thank you Vinayak! We are on the mend! :) You are too kind to call them masterpieces, but thanks for the boost to my self esteem!

Thanks so much Sandra :) I went through a phase where I tried to paint things juries like to see (and I know that typical head studies don't usually fit in there) then I thought forget it and painted this for fun. Thanks for the well wishes too :)

Thanks Sam, that really means a lot to me. The colors you use are truly inspiring. Your compliments mean a lot to me :)

  11. He is beautiful. You've captured his musculature perfectly. And the color is brilliant. How do you decide on your background? I struggle with this element. I think some of my paintings might have come out better had I done a different background.

  12. Carol, thank you! :)

I struggle with background too. What I usually do is pick a color I think will complement the main subject the most, then a few others for contrast or depth and I lay in a very loose wash being careful of where the darks and lights should be. Sometimes it works better than others :)
