prismacolor in my sketchbook
from a vintage black and white photo
If you look close at her nose you can see that initially I had it totally in the wrong place, but kept drawing anyway, even though you can stilll see my goof. :) For sketching I think it's really important to not worry about mistakes, but to just get your initial impression down as quick as you can. I think it really helps to record the first impulse you feel for your subject. Any one else have any thoughts about that?
Happy weekend all! Huzzah!

It is so good to keep getting a look into your sketch book.. The lady is vintage indeed. And I'll pick up your advice on sketching. Thanks for that..
ReplyDeleteI also think its a good idea to keep drawing regardless of mistakes - that's something that took me a LONG time to get my head around! This sketch is absolutely beautiful! And SO vintage - just my cup of tea! I love her gentle expression :0)
ReplyDeleteIt is real interesting to look back at old stuff, stuff I thought was so good then looks so bad to me now........LOL Can you say "crop it and make an ACEO." That's usually how I save something with a mistake. It is lots of fun. Sometimes the best part is the center, sometimes a corner; one never knows until you start picking it apart.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Wonderful sketch! Actually I feel empowered while sketching knowing it s acceptable to be not perfect while sketching ;) -funny how things turn out when you have permission like that !
ReplyDeleteI love the vintage lady, Crystal..beautifully sketched. The hairdo's from the 30's and 40's are so interesting to paint. I think when you do a quick sketch you get a better likeness.
ReplyDeleteI love your sketch book. the vintage lady is awesome!! I love the hair styles.
ReplyDeleteI need to get back to my journaling.
Thanks for inspiring me!
Hi Crystal. I agree - your first impressions while sketching are important.
ReplyDeleteLovely Crystal. I like the soft blended look you've achieved. Great hair too!

ReplyDeleteI think its a pretty sketch; and more important is that you went ahead with your intuition.I do that all the time...sketching is for fun, for letting go!She looks lovely , with a small nose :)
ReplyDeleteContinuing to draw regardless of mistakes is something I still have to work on. I love this sketch and it has a sort of 'timeless' quality. Great work as always. ;-)
