Esoteric - sold

'Esoteric'
6" x 6" oil on masonite panel
SOLD

Something that I find really difficult with oil, or even acrylics, is achieving bright colors. I'm used to exploiting that white paper to get a glowing look and well. . . I can't really do that with oils.

But, I do really enjoy the process of painting with oils. I like how much easier it is to build up the portrait when painting alla prima. There's no layers and waiting for paint to dry it's just go, go, go. A lot like sketching that way which is probably why I like it so much. :)

I really loved this model's hair and those dappled trees behind her. And such Pretty light!

  5. Wow, you just keep on blowing me away with success after success using different media...

I love how you captured her attitude through body language and expression in her eyes -- solid drawing underlie all your paintings and again proves painting is 75% drawing, which you are really, really good at.

I also love how you use oil as oil -- and do not try to use it as watercolor. Instead of layering washes, you went ahead with bold brushwork, and utilized oil at its best. Bravo!

I also found mixing oil colors not as easy as mixing watercolors. The colors always seem to come out dull, or too garish. But I think it is just my unfamiliarity with oil as a medium. With more practice, I hope I will gradually find my way. I think you are doing great...

  11. Really good...oils are complete contrast to watercolors, aren't they? We put the lights over the darks here, while watercolor is about saving the lights! You did a great job and I love that background!

  12. I agree with you, I too have a difficult time achieving clear and bright whites with oil Another problem I face is that when you try to lighten any colour by adding white to it, it invariably becomes cooler than it was.
The painting looks fabulous. I checked out your reference , the likeness is amazing. :)

  13. I love oils, but I love the way you use watercolor. I'm in a watercolor class this semester (part of my required FA courses) and I'm worried about it. Watercolor takes such planning. Oils are so easy to correct! Your work is so beautiful!
