Opportunity

"Opportunity"

10 x 14 watercolor

Finished! And I kind of like it. I think white subjects can be difficult to paint, but I really enjoyed this one. I've been a slow painter lately, kind of having to force myself to get started. I hate that, but I've come to realize that that's how creativity works with me. It ebbs and flows, when it flows I try to ride it out for as much as I can, and when it's not I just keep painting anyway, but not with that verve that I had before. It will pass, I just need to find something that sparks with me again. I'm working on it :)

Wednesday question time! I'm trying to rack my brain for a nice easy one. Hmmmm. . . here we go. If you're an artist, of any type, what is your favorite subject? In painting, drawing, photography and writing. I think I've covered all my bases there. Mine, obviously, is people, but in particular babies. I love to paint babies, there's just something about them that makes me want to try and capture that feeling of having your little one be brand new, again and again.

And, I forgot to mention the poll I posted a few weeks ago! Thanks everyone who voted, you flattered me with your answers. I've just about got the contest figured out (it's going to be so cool!) and will have it up in the next little while, so make sure to check it out! Have a great day everyone!

  1. Absolutely beautiful Crystal. I think I tell you every time that "they just glow" - and this one does. Gorgeous contrast in the mane. As for my favourite subject? Trees : )

  2. For the last 5 minutes or so I have just been looking at your painting and thinking how do you do it... There is always an emotion portrayed in your portraits and I love that..

Coming to the question.. I think I like doing landscapes with a little architectural element in it and a good play of light..

  3. It came out lovely! I can imagine white subjects are challenging... I haven't tried my hand at it yet. And for you question... subject matter changes for me, but it's always something organic.

  4. It looks great, Crystal! Love the reflected, glowing light on the horse's neck.

For your question, I seem to have a penchant for painting animals, especially dogs. However, if any subject is lit in a way that makes it beautiful or interesting, even if the subject itself is mundane, I'll paint it.

Glad to see you posting. :-)

  5. Crystal, you definitely know bone structure and musculature. This is really, really wonderful.

As for your question - I don't think I've found my niche yet. I'm still a fledgling and trying a bit of this and that. I probably have one particular piece from each catagory that I just love and that's OK for now. To be continued, I guess.

  6. Beautifully painted, Crystal. Hope that verve comes back quick.

As far as a favorite subject to paint, I don't have one. It is what is happening in and around a subject that makes me want to paint it - tonal qualities, light play, mysterious shadows, color composition, expressions.

  7. Once again your painting is beautiful... never have I visited and found a piece I didn't enjoy!

I love writing about fantasy, different worlds, kingdoms, lives!! It's so much fun!

  8. I love that you can see the colors of the light reflecting off the horse. As for my favorite subjects...I love taking pictures of my dog Klaus, but I love also focusing on little details in a photograph.

  9. Hi Crystal,
Your painting is beautiful, Again!!! I envy the way that you can capture whites. I haven't tackled that yet, I did do a floral with all yellows, and I found that incredibly difficult, so I have steered clear of white. It's hard when you get in a creative slump. I suggest you take a field trip, looking for inspiration. I found great inspiration visiting art galleries last weekend. Just being in around beautiful paintings sparked my creative energy. I'm still trying to find my style/favorite subject to paint, but I have been painting a lot of florals lately. Happy painting!

  16. Hi Crystal. I have been away so I'm just catching up on what I have missed. The horse is beautiful! I love the colours you have used. It has a lovely, peaceful feel to it. My favorite subject that inspires me is nature - Particularly anything to do with the sea or the beach. That's not to say I am good at them, but I enjoy having a go!
