The Mighty Friesian - SOLD

"The Mighty"  SOLD
ACEO (2.5 x 3.5 inches) watercolor on paper

'The horses paw and prance and neigh,
Fillies and colts like kittens play,
And dance and toss their rippled manes
Shining and soft as silken skeins...'
~Oliver Wendell Holmes

I'm sure I'm not the only girl who dreamed of owning a beautiful black stallion as a girl. I can't believe that this is actually the first one I've ever painted! Excluding those ones done in crayon and marker of course. ;) Horse girls everywhere are shaking their heads in disappointment of me.

This horse is the mighty Keegan Jewell, a truly  magnificent Friesian stallion.  I think I will have to paint a large one of him, just for me. To hang in my bedroom (that's right hubby, you heard me, a giant horse painting in our room!).

*Fess Up Friday: All kinds of questions keep running through my head lately about the direction I want to take my art. Medium? Subject? Size? These seem like such small concerns and yet, they will not leave me alone. I feel like I'm headed somewhere different, I just. . . don't know where. Anyone else ever feel like this? And what did you do about it? Inquiring minds want to know. Have a great weekend everyone.

*this is a new feature I'm thinking of starting. Because I know you all just can't get enough of the inner workings of my scattered mind. ;)

  1. Oh my goodness, Crystal! I can't believe you can paint on such a small canvas and create such a perfect piece!!! I LOVE this horse and think you should do a larger one (for your bedroom!!)

  2. I agree with the comment above. I had no idea your surface was so sparse. Makes me appreciate your exquisite use of space. These are one of my all time favorite horse breeds. You've captured their qualities beautifully.

  4. It's so funny that the same thoughts were bubbling up in my head the last few weeks as well -- what direction should I take my art? I love landscapes but flowers have also lured me time and time again, but I really really want to learn to paint portrait! What about plein air? Shouldn't I be giving it more chances and practice? Should I paint small and sell them online, or should I develope a body of larger works to shoot for the juried show arena?... It's so good to know that I am not the only one pulling my hairs out over these questions!... Lol...

  5. As always a visit with you is both entertaining and inspiring :-) Love the concept 'Fess Up Friday' I don't know do we ever loose the feeling that we are reaching for something more somewhere within us. Of course I'm still in the early learning stage seeing as I came to this game late in life :-) Always inspired by you and look forward to seeing how your inner compass guides you with your art and its direction.

  6. This is a really powerful piece. I'm glad that you want to move your art in new directions, I think it's essential to continue to grow, but don't change your unique style that you bring to each piece. The way you put the colors together is so original and effective.

  7. I love your teeny-tiny paintings! I'm quite sure I wouldn't be good at this, lol!
I think you should just go with the flow. Enjoy the journey and don't worry about where it takes you. Do as you feel, when you feel it - you really can't go wrong! :0)

  9. Your horses are always so beautiful and majestic. It really does show how much you love them.

And coming to your question.. Actually yes. I have faced same and similar questions may times inside of me. But then I calm myself by telling "Dude who are you to take control of your art. Your art is the one who will guide you and take you where you are supposed to go. On a journey of self discovery. So just chill and let it be".. But thats just me.. :)

  10. I cannot believe the size of that powerful painting. You are amazing. I thought what lovely playing cards that would make--I don't know why cards came to mind, I don't play cards.

I like your question. It's the same question that's been going through my head this last year.

Earlier this year, I thought I wanted to go into the Art business, so I needed to paint things that people would like to hang in their homes. Then, I thought no. I have never done that. Why should I do it now? So I gave up such aspirations and have decided to stick with following my whims as inconsistant as they are. I've done that consistantly with my art my whole life. I agree with Prabal. Chill. Take a break. Paint something you've never painted before with a medium you've never used before. Shake yourself up by challenging your appreciable skills. AND STOP THINKING.

  11. I know what you mean about coming to a crossroad of sorts. I'm going thru something similar. My still life work, gets juried I into art shows, etc. But my landscape work, doesn't get as much attention from the "art work" so to speak. However, I sell way more landscapes in all sizes than I do still life. I'm not sure what to make of it. Your work is amazing, just let it lead where it will.

  12. HOW do you paint So well So small???
OK ... I'm sure most of us have days when our brains are going in two or three directions at once, sometimes a lot more. When it's more, don't make any important decisions. [my wise words for today :)]
Something different - take riding lessons???
Whatever you do, Crystal, I know you will do it well and with love.
